What’s a Blog?

OK, I’m Old School. I’ve never read a Blog. So this will be the first I’ve ever written, or read. My entire concept of Blogs will be based on whatever I write here. It better be good.

I am an old retired guy (white beard etc). But also a young retired guy. My wife, Wendy, and I walked away from my legal career in Southern Illinois (among other things) when I was 55 and we moved to a cabin in Colorado at 11,300 feet. Please do this. Well, find your own cabin. Or maybe you’re a beach person. Whatever. Make a Plan. Or don’t make a plan and do it anyway. The worst day here is better than the best day in an office.

Or, as Kerouac said:

“Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing the lawn, climb that goddamn mountain.”

I get to do that a lot. We have 4 14ers (look it up) climbable from our front porch. I did 3 in a gulp on Wednesday. Left 1 for later. That’s just my life now.

You can do this. You must do this. The sooner the better. This is my crusade.

Evangelizing getting out there, and retiring with all due haste. If I am successful I could wreck the entire economy. Good. It deserves it. Of course getting us older farts out of the way could be just what it needs.

Raise the altitude of your life so that even your low days are higher than “normal” people’s high days. Let me put it this way:

“There is a Catskill Eagle in some souls that can alike dive down into the blackest gorges, and soar out of them again and become invisible in the sunny places. And even if he forever flies within the gorge, that gorge is in the mountains; so that even in his lowest swoop the mountain Eagle is still higher than other birds on the plain, even though they soar.”

OK, that’s from Moby Dick.

Retired guys also have lots of time to read.
